NBC will provide hours of 2200 Olympic Games in Beijing in streaming video on the Web, starting today. But Americans do miss some of the best parties. Why? Because NBC, which has exclusive rights for games in the USA, still makes a much more service television ads that Web ads. Thus, for the most anticipated events (volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, boxing) based in the USA have viewers, or watch it on TV (often on tape-delay) ... or they will get sneaky.

One option more convoluted: Watch the video that purports to be online, but not for the eyes. As we have noted, for example, YouTube has a dedicated channel - but only for users outside the USA To watch it, you'll need a YouTube thing thinking that you look somewhere else. That means you'll have to configure your browser to use a proxy server, then redirect your Internet connection via a YouTube countries on the white list as South Korea.

Beyond YouTube, the BBC in September promises of the Internet for Food UK-based Internet users (those who use or the United Kingdom, proxies). There is also the Radio-Canada for the "Canadians" and ABC for "Australians" ... you get the idea.

NEW YORK -- NBC is significantly expanding its Olympics video offerings for the internet and cell phones, a sure sign of its increased comfort with technologies that erect geographic boundaries online.

The network's official Olympics site, NBCOlympics.com, will show for free, on a delayed basis, the complete runs and routines for the top finishers and for all U.S. participants in almost every event, with highlights provided for team sports like hockey, said Gary Zenkel, president of NBC Olympics.

During the 2004 Athens Summer Games, NBC showed only brief highlights. And although access will again be limited to internet users in the United States, NBC won't be requiring a Visa credit card this time to verify eligibility.

"Today, we're confident that the technology does not require that level" of authentication, Zenkel said from Turin, Italy, where the Winter Games opened Friday and continue until Feb. 26.

The controls are required because the International Olympic Committee sells broadcast rights by territory, while internet distribution is generally global. General Electric's NBC paid $613 million for U.S. rights to the Winter Games.

NBC did offer some video highlights on cell phones in 2004, through the mMode information service sold through AT&T Wireless, now part of Cingular Wireless.

This time, highlights will be made available through the major U.S. carriers -- about 1 million U.S. phone subscribers who pay for video service from Verizon Wireless's VCast or MobiTV, which serves Cingular, Sprint and smaller U.S. carriers.

Zenkel said NBC also was making video available through Google's video search site as well as through on-demand services that reach 24 million cable and satellite homes.

None of the video will be live; in most cases it won't be available online or on phones until the end of NBC's broadcast day, generally 11:30 p.m. ET.

By contrast, the BBC s website is simulcasting five television feeds, though only to U.K. residents.

And with NBC planning more than 400 hours of coverage, or more than 24 hours a day, on its broadcast and cable outlets, Zenkel doubts the internet will carry any original footage, beyond training ski runs that took place Thursday, before NBC started its broadcasts Friday.

Olympics video has been slowing making its way online.

In 2000, NBC piped delayed video down controlled fiber-optic cables to only 100,000 homes, while the rest were left with still images captured from television feeds.

Two years later, a Swiss broadcaster streamed video to up to 2,000 subscribers through a closed network of high-speed DSL subscribers in three cities.

More broadcasters were allowed to beam video to computers and mobile phones in 2004 as long as they could restrict access to their countries.

NBC required a credit card from Visa, an NBC advertiser, to check its billing address, though users weren't charged. European broadcasters largely required high-speed broadband connections, to keep foreigners from connecting via international phone calls.

Many of those same restrictions are in place this year, although Zenkel said the control technologies have improved and made credit-card checks unnecessary.

Rather, NBC will rely on Akamai Technologies to perform several behind-the-scenes checks, including the user's numeric internet address, which can generally pinpoint a specific city or even company network. Entriq will encrypt the video to prevent piracy.

NBC also is working with Intel to make high-resolution video available to owners of its Viiv entertainment PC platform. The system can accommodate up to 10,000 users at a time. Others get lower-quality video when they visit NBCOlympics.com.

The network, meanwhile, will offer 15-second previews through Google Video, with users directed to the NBC site for the complete feed. Bob Costas will host daily two-minute highlight packages for Walt Disney's ESPN.com.

In both cases, Zenkel said, any segments containing competition footage will be restricted to U.S. users.

As the start of the Olympics draws near

Last night my wife and I spent about an hour scouring the next two weeks of listings, setting up every recording we could find for our favorite sports (me: road, track, mt bike, and bmx cycling events, her: swimming and soccer). I noticed that even with an upgraded 750Gb drive in my TiVo, recording dozens of 3-to-8 hour blocks of HD programming is going to max out our TiVo if we don't stay on top of it and watch/delete every couple days during the next two weeks.

Having the chance to see things live online will be a nice addition to that as well, in the cases where events we like are tape delayed until primetime.

One of the most obvious ways the Web will be utilized with the Beijing Olympics is with online video coverage. In the US, NBC has teamed up with Microsoft Silverlight for 2,200 hours of live coverage. Meanwhile in China, Adobe has teamed up with a Chinese network.

Despite the geographical limitations, NBC is promising lots of 'new media' features in its Web coverage. These include:

Users have the ability to watch whatever sport they want, unlike on TV where you get what the broadcaster dishes up.
There will be 3,000 hours of "on-demand encores of full events and highlights".
Users can switch between up to 4 live streams.
Users will see the standard world feed that is sent to all broadcasters, so there will be no network TV commentators. Instead, the NBC expects to see bloggers "serve as play-by-play voices and analysts" (free talent!).
Users will have access to statistics, biographies and other information.

As the NYT notes, NBC's coverage of the Olympics online is the culmination of NBC's "multiple-network strategy, which began in 2000 with the addition of CNBC and MSNBC to the mix." The upshot is that coverage of the Olympics becomes an on-demand, 24/7 experience -- although unfortunately not worldwide in NBC's case. This is possible because the "cyber-pipelines" infrastructure is largely in place now, in the US, to support such extensive online video coverage.

NBC's coverage online will be powered by Microsoft Silverlight and Windows Media player. CNET reports that Limelight Networks is being used to route the video streams to Internet service providers. NBC was originally planning to use Adobe's Flash, but CNET noted that NBC "was convinced by Microsoft earlier this year that Silverlight would allow it to stream more high-quality video than would have been possible using Flash."

It seems China's TV networks didn't buy that line, as Adobe has partnered with CCTV.com to bring Olympics online video to mainland China.

Today, Adobe announced a partnership with CCTV International Networks Co, Ltd. to deliver Web coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to fans throughout mainland China and Macau. CCTV.com owns the online video rights to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games for mainland China and Macau. CCTVOlympics.com plans to provide 5,000 hours of "on-demand protected streamed video content including full event replays, highlights, features, interviews and encore packages." This is made up of 3,800 hours of worldwide broadcast Olympic Games video and 1,200 hours of CCTV's own video.

Choosing Adobe as a partner, as with NBC and Silverlight, is a hint that Chinese Internet viewers can expect a rich interactive experience. The press release trumpets "an unprecedented Web experience created with Adobe Flex and delivered via Adobe Flash technology".

Unlike NBC though, CCTV is not eschewing commentators and replacing them with bloggers. CCTV promises "expert analysis from CCTV's Olympic media team". However it also will be diving into the social web via "social networking features that will enable fans to share aspects of their Olympic experience with friends."

Conclusion

The 2008 Olympics is set to be the first to have a mammoth online video presence. Up to 5,000 hours of coverage would be enough to satisfy even the most rabid of Olympics fan. What's possibly even more interesting to watch will be the performance of interactive Web technologies such as Silverlight and Flash in this coverage. Which one will end up better? Although I guess if you're in the US, you'll never know about Flash - and vice versa for the Chinese regarding Silverlight.

The Beijing Olympics starts in a few days and what better test of the mainstream web is there than the world's biggest sports event. This is the first in a series of posts that will look at the Web technologies powering this year's Olympics.
